Joan Newland

Dr. Joan ("Joanie") Newland grew up in the Chicago suburb of Buffalo Grove, Illinois. From an early age, she knew veterinary medicine was her calling, having always felt a special connection with animals.

She began her journey toward becoming a veterinarian at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences. After graduation, Dr. Newland spent a year working as a veterinary assistant at the neighborhood animal hospital where her own family had brought their pets for years. Dr. Newland went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona.

She was drawn to the Bay Area by her brother, who has called the area home for the past decade. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Newland enjoys hiking, staying active at the gym, attending concerts, and spending time with family and friends. She is thrilled to be a part of the team at Polk and Castro Animal Hospital and looks forward to caring for your beloved family members!
